Las Vegas City Council Changes Rules For Downtown Sex Shops

Las Vegas City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to loosen restrictions on sex shops in the city's downtown.

The initiative will deal with how adult bookstores and emporiums in the downtown core can expand or modify. It updates an original ordinance passed more than two decades ago that was designed to restrict adult shops.

Councilman Bob Coffin said the hope then was that the harsh laws would make the shops go away. The revised ordinance applies to six adult businesses downtown within two blocks of Las Vegas Boulevard between Sahara Avenue and Alta Drive.

Coffin sponsored the ordinance and wanted to emphasize that the new ordinance does not green-light any additional sex shops in the area and that existing stores are still limited to their current size.
