FLDS Leaders Convicted Of Polygamy

Two leaders of a polygamous church outpost in Canada were found guilty of practicing polygamy this week.

Winston Blackmore and James Oler are both members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which is based in the sister cities of Hilldale, Utah and Colorado City, Ariz.

It’s an area collectively known as Short Creek, located about two and a half hours northeast of Las Vegas.

Blackmore had 27 wives, some of whom were from Utah, and 145 children. Much of the evidence in the trial came from marriage and personal records seized by law enforcement at a church compound in Texas in 2008. The court’s decision sets up another potential court battle over the constitutionality of Canada’s polygamy laws.
