Subcommittee Advances Yucca Mtn Bill

A congressional subcommittee advanced a bill connected with the proposed nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain.

The Las Vegas Sun reports the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on the Environment voted Thursday to greenlight the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2017.

The bill now goes to the full committee.

The Nevada Agency for Nuclear Projects sent a 10-point list of concerns about the bill to congressional staff Wednesday night. According to the agency, the bill would pre-empt state air quality permits and requirements. Rep. Dina Titus D-NV said the bill would usurp state water rights and eliminates the cap on the amount of waste that was originally going to be sent to the site.

Titus, Governor Brian Sandoval, and Senator Catherine Cortez Masto have all said they will fight the legislation.
