Once Defunct Women's Commission Seeks New Power From Legislature

The chairwoman of the Nevada Commission on Women is pushing for some organizational changes in the state legislature.

Elisa Cafferata presented Assembly Bill 258 on Monday, which spells out the goal of the commission as the advancement of women toward full equality.

It would also allow the commission to use grants to pay consultants rather than relying on volunteers.

Members of the assembly passed the bill 33-9 before the legislative deadline last week. The nine no votes were from Republicans.

The commission was started in 1991, but went dormant for almost two decades without governor-appointed members until Governor Brian Sandoval helped revive the commission and appointed 10 members in 2015.
