Bill To Ban Private Prisons Waiting For Full State Senate Approval

A bill that would eventually ban the state from using private prisons is making its way through the Legislature, with days to go before the session ends.

Assembly Bill 303 was heard in a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting Tuesday. Nevada’s state prisons are not currently run by any for-profit industries.

The amended bill would allow Nevada to continue sending inmates out of state through the Interstate Compact for Adult Offenders for the next five years. This time will allow the state to make improvements and refurbishments to current facilities.

The bill passed a 38-3 Assembly vote on May 24 and was sent to the Senate committee, which needs to approve it before the full Senate can vote and send it to the governor.

The last day of the 120-day session is June 5.
