Reno Declares Itself 'Welcoming City'

The Reno City Council stepped into the national immigration debate yesterday when it unanimously approved a resolution naming Reno a “Welcoming City.”

Council members were quick to clarify that this measure does not equal the same as a sanctuary city, and does nothing to change city policy on cooperating with immigration enforcement officials.

They said the resolution is a statement of the city’s welcoming attitude toward people of all cultures and immigration backgrounds. Some opponents accused the council of using a euphemism for sanctuary city, and warned the resolution will attract rapists and burglars with illegal immigration statuses.
