The Elko County Commission is weighing plans to set up general improvement districts in order to raise additional tax revenue for road improvement.
The Elko Daily Free Press reports the commission wanted to learn more about the district in order to help pay for roads not maintained by the county.
The issue has come to light recently with widespread flooding in Elko County earlier this year and the need to repair affected roads.
Some hurdles exist to setting up a general improvement district in Elko County, not least of which involves public opposition.
Only a simple majority of residents who would be in the district would need to disapprove of it in order for the plans not to go through.
It's also possible the districts would be untenable because of the property tax cap – any additional revenue raised in such a district counts toward that cap.
