Assembly Bill To Mandate Pre-K Programs In Nevada Schools

Nevada students would be mandated to start school by age 5 and could start as young as 4 under a bill introduced in the Assembly yesterday.

AB 186 was introduced by Assemblywoman Olivia Diaz, during an Assembly Education Committee meeting. Diaz said that many students who are financially unable to attend preschool then lag behind other students when entering kindergarten.

Under the bill, school districts would be required to establish pre-kindergarten programs. The state estimates less than 15 percent of 4-year-olds are currently served in a pre-kindergarten program.

Districts are mandated to offer kindergarten programs already, but families do not have to enroll their children.

The committee took no action on the bill.
