A Democratic assemblyman from Las Vegas said this week he will file a resolution for a constitutional amendment to solidify same sex marriage’s legality in the Nevada Constitution.
Assemblyman Nelson Araujo made the announcement at the Nevada Supreme Court building along with several Democratic leaders in a news conference criticizing Republican President Donald Trump’s nomination of Neil Gorsuch for the U.S. Supreme Court.
Araujo’s amendment must pass in two sessions of the Legislature, as well as a referendum vote to become law, essentially making the amendment a five-year process.
The lawmakers expressed concern the judge might want to overturn the 2015 U.S. Supreme Court ruling which legalized same sex marriage nationwide.
Assemblyman Justin Watkins from Las Vegas also said he would push a resolution asking for thorough vetting of Gorsuch.
