Gov. Brian Sandoval has proposed slashing the state’s mental health budget by $20 million, which would include eliminating 112 positions statewide.
The Reno Gazette Journal reportsSandoval argues that the expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act means more mentally ill clients can find care in private hospitals.
A statement from the governor's office said the governor is proposing an increase of nearly $200 million in Medicaid funding, which includes mental health.
"Over the next two years the Governor’s budget will include a record $500 million in spending on mental health services in Nevada. This is more than we have ever invested in behavioral health in our state's history. The Governor has worked hard to ensure that no Nevadan will lose mental health services. In fact, more Nevadans are receiving mental health services now than ever before," the statement reads.
The governor's budget will be the focus of the legislative session, which begins Monday.
