Utah Lawmakers Weighing Medical Marijuana Proposals

Utah lawmakers are set to discuss at a news conference which of their medical marijuana proposals will move forward during a session in which the topic is expected to take center stage.

The event Friday comes after lawmakers started working on five separate medical marijuana proposals. The plans could allow people with a number of conditions to take cannabis oil, spur more research on its effects treating certain conditions and set up rules about growing and distribution.

Utah already allows the marijuana extract called cannabidiol to be used by those with severe epilepsy, as long as they obtain it from other states.

The state tried to pass similar legislation last year, but two separate proposals died amid regulatory and budgetary concerns.
