Gay-Rights Activist Plans Ad Campaign Against LDS Church

A gay-rights activist and former U.S. presidential candidate hopes to build a legal case to revoke the tax-exempt status of the Mormon church.

Republican political operative Fred Karger has been a longtime critic of the LDS Church’s involvement in California’s 2008 Proposition 8 campaign. Thursday, Karger announced a network of lawyers, researchers, investigators and other organizations have plans to take the fight to the IRS.

The Salt Lake Tribune reportsthat Karger visited Salt Lake City to stage auditions with Mormon and ex-Mormon youth aggrieved by the faith’s LGBT policies.

Some of the youth will be featured in a series of ads to be aired in Utah early next year. The ads will encourage others to step forward with inside information on the church’s business holdings and political dealings – including its efforts against same-sex marriage.
