UT Legislature Called Into Special Session

Gov. Gary Herbert is calling lawmakers into a special session Wednesday to tweak the gas tax cities and counties receive and exempt some recycling facilities from some licensing requirements.

Herbert's office announced the one-day special session would start at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The gas tax changes mark the second time lawmakers are tweaking an overhaul of Utah's fuel tax overhaul passed in 2015. That law included a complicated formula that was supposed to give cities and counties a 17.5 percent increase in road money.

Lawmakers tweaked it this year after some cities actually lost money but legislator realized the fix steered too much money away from urban areas. The counties and cities spent this summer working with them on a new fix.

The recycling proposal aims to revamp one Herbert vetoed, citing concerns from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
