LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada Department of Transportation workers have removed about a dozen unauthorized sculptures along State Route 488 in the vicinity of the eastern Nevada community of Baker and nearby Great Basin National Park.
Department spokeswoman Meg Ragonese tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the sculptures were removed due to safety concerns.
Ragonese says the sculptures were in places where drivers need to be able to safely stop if they must pull off the road.
Some area residents are critical of the state's action, saying the state's action was heavy-handed and that the art pieces were positioned far enough off the pavement to not pose a real safety problem.
Ragonese says the sculptures will be stored at a maintenance yard for about a month or until someone claims them.
