Disbarred Las Vegas Lawyer Gets Prison For Theft From Clients

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 48-year-old disbarred Las Vegas lawyer has been sentenced to up to seven years in state prison for stealing more than $140,000 from her former clients.

Jeanne Winkler wept Thursday as Clark County District Court Judge Richard Scotti sentenced her to a minimum of 2½ years before she's eligible for parole.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the judge blamed Winkler's actions on greed.

Scotti also ordered Winkler to pay about $143,000 in restitution.

Winkler pleaded guilty in May to felony theft, and avoided trial in the state case.

She also pleaded guilty in May 2012 to a federal conspiracy charge for her role in a scheme to defraud Las Vegas-area homeowners associations.

Winkler avoided prison in that case, but was ordered last year to pay a share of $47,000 in restitution.
