An official says an armed ex-felon who was shot dead by a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper last week fired first while fleeing a traffic stop, and one bullet hit the patrol officer's badge.
Highway Patrol Col. Dennis Osborn told reporters Thursday the trooper, Shawn Peckham, was wearing a ballistic vest and wasn't seriously hurt in the 19-second gunfight early Aug. 26 near a casino in southeast Las Vegas.
Matthew Gibbon died after being shot in the hand and the forehead.

Patrol car dash cam video shows Gibbon with a gun in his hand as he runs from a car on Boulder Highway south of U.S. 95.
Outside the camera view, audio recorded the sounds of two shots — then two bursts of five shots and six shots from Peckham.
