BLM Conducting Emergency Horse Roundup

Northern Nevada is seeing what's being described by the BLM as an emergency horse roundup this week.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports the BLM is conducting the operation near Wells, which is about 50 miles east of Elko.

BLM officials say there are about 60 wild horses in the area that need to be removed because there's not enough water for them where they currently roam.

About half of the herd had been captured as of Tuesday.

The horses will be sent to an area north of Reno, where they will be placed for adoption.

The BLM says it is using traps with water and hay to lure the horses to them, rather than using helicopters as has been done in the past.
