Proposal Calls For Automatic Voter Registration Through DMV

The state will consider an initiative to automatically register residents to vote when they apply for or renew a Nevada license or identification card.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the proposal submitted to the Secretary of State's Office is backed by the group Nevadans for Modern and Secure Elections. It would require the Department of Motor Vehicles to send information to the state to register people to vote or update their information.

The initiative has been described as a way to increase the accuracy of registration rolls by keeping people's information updated as they move or change their contact information.

The proposal comes as about 770,000 eligible voters in Nevada aren't registered.

A spokesman for the Nevada group says similar bills have been introduced in more than 30 states.
