Firefighters Battle Twin Blazes In Northern Nevada

A wildfire has forced the closure of a road, trails and campgrounds at Great Basin National Park in eastern Nevada, where another fire has grown to nearly 14 square miles in the scenic Ruby Mountains east of Elko.

No injuries are reported and no structures damaged in either fire.

A park spokeswoman says more than 160 firefighters battling a 7-square-mile fire near Wheeler Peak. She says one campground is threatened.

The fire was started by lightning and was discovered Monday. It's about 10 percent contained, and the BLM hopes to have full containment by next week.

More than 150 firefighters are working to contain the larger wildfire about 3 miles west of Bald Mountain Mine and 5 miles south of Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

A U.S. Bureau of Land Management official says there's no immediate threat to the mine or the refuge.
