Feds Approve Funding For St. George Airport

Federal officials have approved $500,000 worth of snow removal equipment for the St. George Regional Airport.

The Spectrum reports the St. George City Council will vote Thursday on whether it wants to pay the required 10 percent of the equipment costs.

Airport Manager Rich Stehmeier says the new tools will help the facility keep up its federal certifications and give major airlines confidence the airport can stay open in poor weather conditions.

Stehmeier says there were no significant snow problems at the airport last winter, but storms during each of the two previous winters caused the airport to shut down.

The equipment includes a large truck with powerful brushes to clear snow that can also be put to use in warmer weather to clean the runway asphalt.
