Southwest Gas Restoring Service After Fire

A gas company official says crews are deploying door-to-door in a northwest Las Vegas neighborhood to restore service cut off to quell a fire sparked by a backhoe operator digging in the street.

Southwest Gas Co. spokeswoman Sonia Headen says about 100 company workers fanned out Tuesday to relight pilot lights in the Summerlin area around Far Hills Avenue and the 215 Beltway.

Headen said about 2,000 customers were left without gas service after the Monday fire fueled by escaping natural gas from a damaged underground conduit on Redwood Grove Avenue.

But about 30 homes were evacuated while the fire burned.

Nearby Bonner Elementary School was used as a shelter.
