Southwest Airlines has come out in opposition to plans to put a new football stadium near McCarran International Airport.
KSNV reports the airline, which is the largest source of traffic in and out of McCarran, wrote a letter to Clark County Commission Chair Steve Sisolak expressing its disapproval of a plan that would put a stadium at Tropicana Avenue and Koval Lane.
In the letter, Southwest's vice president of airport affairs and its senior vice president of airport operations said a stadium that close to McCarran would, in their words, "erode safety, security and capacity at the airport."
The airline also said the traffic problems a stadium that close to McCarran would create would negatively impact their customers.
The 42 acre parcel of land was purchased by UNLV for $50 million for campus expansion and a potential replacement for Sam Boyd Stadium.
Las Vegas Sands and Majestic Realty, partners in the proposal to bring an NFL-ready stadium to Las Vegas, have earmarked that plot as where they'd want to put their facility.
