Las Vegas-Area Health Officials Find Mosquitoes With West Nile

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Health officials in Las Vegas say they've found the first West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes of the season in an area of North Las Vegas.

There are no reports of humans being infected, but the Southern Nevada Health District said Monday that three mosquitoes were trapped and identified with the virus in the 89032 postal ZIP code.

That's roughly from Lake Mead Boulevard to Craig Road and Decatur Boulevard to 5th Street.

The district says a horse in Logandale also tested positive for West Nile virus. Horses are susceptible to West Nile virus through the bite of an infected mosquito, just like people.

Chief health officer Dr. Joe Iser says ongoing efforts haven't found mosquito species known to spread the Zika virus as well as chikungunya and dengue.
