Elko Rejects Latest Airport Settlement Offer

The city of Elko has rejected the most recent settlement offer in its nine-year dispute over repairs at the airport.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports that the city council voted unanimously to turn down the $250,000 offer from Canyon Construction Company on Tuesday.

Elko rejected an offer of $100,000 less than six months ago.

The city sued Canyon and Knight Piesold & Co. in 2007, saying the concrete used at Elko Regional Airport in 2001 was falling apart and becoming dangerous. Assistant City Manager Scott Wilkinson says Knight Piesold settled when the case went to an arbitration panel in 2012, but Canyon appealed.

Wilkinson says Elko spent about $3.4 million on the lawsuit, including attorney and professional consulting fees.
