A new gas tax in Nye County has started to pay dividends for the government.
The Pahrump Valley Times reports [http://pvtimes.com/news/new-tax-brings-close-190000-county-coffers-two-months.html] the county collected nearly $190,000 over January and February thanks to the tax, which went into effect at the first of the year.
The county doesn't know yet how much money it has collected since, as those funds have not been disbursed.
The gas tax hike was the first in 30 years, increasing county taxes from four to nine cents per gallon.
The revenue from the gas tax must be used for road works and rehabilitation projects, according to state law.
However, not everybody in Nye County is happy about the increased gas tax.
A group is trying to get the tax repealed by placing getting an initiative on the fall ballot.
