Nevada Giving Its State Welcome Signs An Upgrade

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The signs that greet highway motorists as they cross state-border entry points into Nevada will feature new designs for the first time in about two decades.

The Las Vegas Sun reports that Nevada officials are considering four sign designs created by high school students as part of a statewide competition to choose the winning design. The finalists' designs emphasize Nevada's open spaces, beauty and cowboy tradition.

The new signs are expected to go up sometime this summer.

The state's current signs showing a miner looking into the distance were authorized by the Legislature in the early 1990s.

The Nevada Department of Transportation board agreed Monday to raffle off the signs once they are replaced by the new ones.
