Feds Close Deadly Strenuous Canyon Hike To Colorado River

BOULDER CITY, Nev. (AP) — A week after a 25-year-old woman was rescued, unresponsive, on a popular but sometimes deadly Colorado River canyon trail, the National Park Service is closing the route to hikers during the hottest parts of the year.

Park spokeswoman Christie Vanover said Monday that Goldstrike Canyon and Arizona Hot Spring trails will close annually from May 15 to Sept. 30.

Closures began two years ago, after one person died and 31 people required medical treatment on the trails in 2013, and three people died and 35 were taken to hospitals in 2014.

Vanover says last year, there were 15 incidents on the trails, but no fatalities.

Goldstrike Canyon leads to Goldstrike and Nevada hot springs and the river.

White Rock leads to Arizona Hot Spring, Liberty Bell Arch and the river.
