A magnitude 3.5 earthquake struck in a remote part of the northern Nevada desert near where the annual Burning Man counterculture festival is held, but there's been no report of any damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake hit at 4:11 p.m. Thursday about 8 miles west of Gerlach. That's about 100 miles north of Reno, 20 miles from the California line.
The initial temblor was followed minutes later by a magnitude-2.5 event and a half-dozen smaller aftershocks.
Washoe County sheriff's officials said no damage has been reported.
Tom Rennie, a seismic analyst at the University of Nevada's Seismology Laboratory in Reno, said Thursday the area has seen increased seismic activity in recent days, but it's such a remote area that few people are likely to feel it.
