CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Opponents of Nevada's new commerce tax are exploring whether their effort to repeal it can rebound after a major court setback.
Attorneys on both sides of the tax are scheduled to meet in court Friday to determine whether a rewritten version of the proposed measure passes legal muster.
The hearing comes after the Nevada Supreme Court ruled last week that a petition to repeal it wasn't worded properly. The 20,000 or so signatures on it were invalidated.
The repeal effort has dim prospects even if the petition's sufficiently rewritten. Supporters need more than 55,000 valid signatures on their petition by June 21.
The business tax was approved last year by the Republican-controlled Legislature. Opponents say it was a betrayal after voters roundly defeated a margins tax on the 2014 ballot.
