After Obama Memo, Elko County School District Plans No Changes For Transgender Student Policy

The Elko County School District says it does not plan to make any changes to policy in response to President Obama's directive for schools to accommodate transgender students.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports the district's legal counsel has interpreted Obama's letter not as law or policy, but as a political statement.

District officials told the newspaper they feel as though policies currently in place already suffice.

Last fall, the school district came under fire for denying access to male bathrooms and locker rooms to a transgender student, a case where the ACLU of Nevada became involved.

This comes on the heels of a disagreement between Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt about the Obama administration's message.

Laxalt has cited it as an example of government overreach, while Sandoval has said Nevada law already protects against discrimination based on gender identity.
