Utah's governor and top legislators say they've agreed to have lawmakers meet in a special session next month to restore funding to several educational programs that Gov. Gary Herbert nixed with a line-item veto in March.
Herbert, House Speaker Greg Hughes and Senate President Wayne Niederhauser said in a statement Monday that the restored money will be paired with extra scrutiny of the programs.
The session is expected to occur in May.
The House and Senate had been polling their members to see whether there was enough support for a veto override but legislative leaders were also negotiating with the governor's office over a possible special session. It allows them to make changes instead of simply restoring the $5.8 million in cut funds.
Legislative leaders say they've stopped polling lawmakers on the veto now that they've struck a deal.
