New Utah Process For Candidate Nomination Attracts Few

While changes to Utah's election system allows candidates to seek the nomination either at the convention or by collecting signatures most candidates are opting for the traditional route.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that only one of every four Utah candidates for federal, statewide or legislative offices this year is using the new option of collecting signatures.

According to campaign filing forms, of the 263 candidates, 199 are opting for the traditional caucus, 60 plan to use both systems and only four chose to try to only collect signatures.

Legislators in 2014 passed a law allowing candidates to either qualify by collecting signatures or by having enough votes at a party's state convention. The Republican Party has been fighting the law.
