A public affairs official for the Mormon church says it is expanding its boundaries more than restricting them.
The Deseret News reports that Michael Otterson said Tuesday at the University of Utah that the Mormon church has been building relationships with interfaith leaders, academics and minority communities, including women and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
Otterson warned against what he called "bubbles," or seeing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through a narrow lens.
He shot back at commentators who say the church is rigidly resisting change, pointing to its belief in modern revelation. Instead, Otterson said he recognizes the right of leaders to set boundaries for doctrine and behavior.
More than 150 people packed an auditorium to hear Otterson's speech during UVU's Mormon Studies Conference.
