CDC: St. George In Range For Zika Carrying Mosquito

A new Centers for Disease Control map shows southwestern Utah is in the range of the type of mosquito that can transmit the Zika virus.

Mosquito abatement officials conduct surveillance constantly. They spotted the Aedes aegypti in the St. George area three years ago.

Southwest Mosquito Control District manager Sean Amodt says that type of mosquito died off thanks to the state's cold weather.

Previous maps of the Aedes aegypti mosquito's range were more than a decade old.

Researchers are exploring possible links between pregnant women with the Zika virus and possible birth defects.

Health officials say cases spread by local transmission will likely show up in southern states as temperatures rise and mosquitoes breed.
