UT Supreme Court Allows FLDS Lawsuit To Go Forward

The Utah Supreme Court has cleared the way for a lawsuit filed by a woman who says polygamous leader Warren Jeffs forced her to marry her cousin when she was 14.

The high court decided Wednesday that Elissa Wall can sue for potentially millions of dollars in damages from the group's communal property trust, which is now controlled by the state.

Trust lawyers had argued that the suit should be dismissed because Wall came to a secret agreement with her former husband to help her win.

Wall's attorney says there was nothing improper about the settlement with her cousin, who was 19 when they wed in 2001.

The Associated Press generally doesn't identify people who say they were sexually assaulted, but Wall has spoken publicly and written a book about her experiences.
