Officials Confirm First Case Of Zika In Southern Nevada

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Health officials say they've confirmed the first case of the Zika virus in Clark County.

The Southern Nevada Health District said Thursday that a man who had recently traveled to Guatemala tested positive for Zika. The mosquito species that spreads the virus hasn't been found in the area, although the health district's chief said its office is ready to trap the species if it turns up as it has in neighboring states.

Zika can spread through mosquito bites, but also through sex and from a mother to her baby during her pregnancy.

Most people who catch Zika only experience mild symptoms like fever, skin rash and muscle pain, but it's also been linked to a spike in babies born with abnormally small heads.
