Drug Crimes Increase In Elko County

Elko County is reporting an increase in arrests on drug related crimes.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports drug arrests in the county went up around 54 percent from 2014 to 2015.

It wasn't just arrests that went up, though.

The amount of methamphetamine seized by the sheriff's department from 2014 to 2015 increased by more than 1,000 percent; the amount of heroin confiscated increased by more than 160,000 percent.

As a result, the sheriff's department has added another narcotics detective to its force, and plans on increasing educational measures with the hope of cutting down on drug crime.

The department has also started a narcotics task force.
