Hundreds Attend Memorial For Nevada Sen. Debbie Smith

SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — A bipartisan group of mourners is remembering longtime Nevada legislator Debbie Smith as a dedicated public servant, wife and mother.

The Reno-Gazette Journal reports hundreds attended a memorial for Smith on Sunday at Sparks High School.

The Democratic state senator died Feb. 21 at the age of 60. Doctors started treating her for a malignant brain tumor about a year ago.

Many attending the Sunday memorial service wore gray, a color used by advocates to raise awareness about brain cancer.

Former Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley, Senate Minority Leader Aaron Ford and Assistant Majority Leader Ben Kieckhefer all spoke at the event.

Smith was first elected to the state Assembly in 2000 and won a seat in the Senate in 2012.
