A new bill could make it legal for Utah residents to carry a concealed, loaded gun in public without a permit.
Republican Sen. David Hinkins of Orangeville says he began working on the proposal after seeing other states' success with similar laws.
Utah residents can currently carry an unloaded weapon out in the open without a permit. A gun is considered unloaded in Utah if there's no round in the chamber.
Hinkins introduced a similar proposal last year. It passed in the Senate but died in the House.
Gary Sackett of the Gun Violence Prevention Center of Utah says this proposal would remove the important requirement that concealed gun holders take a firearm training course.
Gov. Gary Herbert vetoed a similar plan in 2013. He says he will likely not approve this one unless the measure looks substantially different.
