Big Crowds Expected For Nevada Rooftop Solar Rate Vote

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Hundreds of people are expected to show up to a Nevada Public Utilities Commission meeting where regulators are deciding how to phase in higher rates for existing solar customers.

Commissioners are set to vote Friday on a request to "grandfather" customers into more favorable rates if they installed or applied for rooftop solar panels before last fall.

A preliminary order indicates the commission will give older customers 12 years to transition into rates approved in December. That's more than the four years the commission previously approved but less than rooftop solar companies want.

Commissioners say the new rates phase out a subsidy that traditional energy customers pay to support a much-smaller group of rooftop solar customers.

Solar customers say it means their panels will take years more to pay off.
