Washoe County Panel Seeks $600M Tax Hike On November Ballot

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A state-sanctioned committee in Washoe County has decided to put a ballot question before voters in November seeking tax increases to generate $600 million for the Washoe County School District.

The Public Schools Overcrowding & Repair Needs Committee voted unanimously Friday to move forward with the ballot measure and work out details before the formal question has to be written by April.

The money would be used to build new schools and renovate existing campuses.

School Superintendent Traci Davis says it's critical to addressing overcrowding in schools in Sparks and Reno.

The Nevada Legislature gave the panel the authority to seek only certain kinds of tax increases through ballot measures. The independent committee with members appointed by business, labor and other community groups says it's considering plans to raise sales or property taxes.
