Residents in Pahrump are lobbying to move the seat of Nye County's government there from Tonopah.
The Pahrump Valley Times reports a group of residents filed paperwork with the county this week to try and put an initiative on the 2016 ballot on the topic.
Currently, Nye County's seat is Tonopah, which has just under 2,500 residents.
Pahrump, located about 170 miles southeast, has roughly 36,000 residents.
Nye County is the third largest county in the country, and its size necessitates having duplicate services for both population centers given their distance.
The group behind the measure says it is not cost effective to have the county seat in Tonopah, and that there is a greater chance of corruption among government officials.
The potential petitioners are also trying to put measures on this fall's ballot to repeal Nye County's public safety sales tax, which was passed in 2006, and a gas tax that recently passed in the county.
