Utah Among Fastest Growing States

New U.S. Census numbers show that Utah was among the fastest-growing states in the country this year, thanks primarily to its high birth rate.

The report says that 2.99 million people lived in Utah in July, and state counts show that number hit the milestone of 3 million a few months later.

The census data shows Utah's population grew 1.7 percent between July 2014 and July 2015, placing Utah among the top-10 fastest-growing states.

Most of that growth came from new babies. While the birth rate has dropped in the years since the recession hit, it's still the highest in the country.

University of Utah demographer Pam Perlich says Utah is different from other fast-growing states, where migration is ticking up after a lull during the recession and becoming a major growth driver.
