State auditors say a Nevada Highway Patrol program that inspects the state's school buses for safety is overlooking dozens of vehicles that don't fall under the traditional definition of a bus.
An audit released this month identified about 155 non-bus vehicles in Nevada that take students to school or school activities but aren't given twice-yearly inspections.
The state has about 2,500 regular school buses get inspections. Issues such as broken mirrors, defective brakes and loose seats can put a bus out of service.
Auditors say failing to inspect all the vehicles can endanger students.
Highway patrol officials said they're revising their policies so all vehicles used for moving students are inspected regularly, but may need to hire two new employees to handle the increased workload.
