30,000 Nevadans Without Power; Up To 18 Inches Snow In Reno

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A wet, heavy snow storm on the Sierra's eastern front snarled traffic around Lake Tahoe, closed schools in Reno and caused power outages for tens of thousands of northern Nevadans.

NV Energy spokeswoman Faye Anderson says more than 36,000 customers remained without power by midmorning Tuesday, primarily in Reno and Sparks. She says the outages were caused by trees falling on some power lines and snow accumulating on others.

The National Weather Service says anywhere from 6 to 18 inches of snow was reported in the Reno-Sparks area. Several inches of snow also fell in Carson City, Gardnerville, Fernley and Fallon.

Travel restrictions were lifted on U.S. Interstate 80 over the Sierra but chains or snow tires were required on most other mountain highways.
