UNR Worries It Is Losing Money On Out-Of-State Students

As the number of out-of-state students entering the University of Nevada, Reno continues to grow, university officials are concerned that the state is losing money on those students, most of whom leave Nevada after graduation.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports UNR's out-of-state freshman enrollment this fall jumped 17 percent. The increase can be attributed to UNR's participation in a 15-state exchange program that offers students discounted tuition.

Member of the board of regents, Trevor Hayes, says the state may be losing money on the thousands of out-of-state undergraduates who pay nearly half the regular out-of-state tuition.

But discounted tuition at UNR will be harder to earn next fall. The board recently raised the academic requirements for out-of-state students to receive the biggest discounts.
