CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The governor's science office is awarding more than $300,000 in grants to Nevada colleges so they can train workers in high-tech jobs.

Gov. Brian Sandoval announced the STEM Workforce Challenge Grants on Wednesday. He said the programs will help develop a pipeline of highly skilled workers for jobs at new companies moving into Nevada.

Truckee Meadows Community College is getting about $150,000 to train students how to operate and maintain commercial heating and cooling systems. The systems are vital for data storage company Switch, which needs to manage the heat produced by power-intensive servers.

Western Nevada College is getting $150,000 to build a mechatronics center offering a curriculum from technology company Siemens.

Nevada State College will receive $37,000 to increase the number of science and technology teachers in rural areas.
