Defenders Of Nevada Commerce Tax Challenge Repeal Effort

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Defenders of the new Nevada Commerce Tax have filed a challenge against efforts to repeal the measure.

The group Coalition for Nevada's Future filed a response Thursday to a proposed ballot measure that would nullify the business tax backed by Gov. Brian Sandoval and most of the Legislature. The coalition says the proposal has numerous legal flaws.

Republican Controller Ron Knecht is leading the repeal effort. If the petition survives the court challenge, supporters will need to gather more than 55,000 signatures statewide to put the measure on the ballot.

The Commerce Tax applies to the gross revenue of businesses that make more than $4 million from Nevada each year. It was part of a three-pronged bill passed this spring that was aimed at providing more funding for schools.
