Sandoval Says He'll Name Collins Replacement By September 1

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Gov. Brian Sandoval says he'll appoint someone to replace former Clark County Commissioner Tom Collins before Sept. 1.

The Republican governor announced his timeline on Tuesday, a day after Collins suddenly resigned his post with more than a year left in his term. Sept. 1 is the next scheduled commission meeting.

Collins' two-sentence resignation letter said he was leaving because of family matters over the next few months that would affect his ability to serve his constituents.

Collins served in the Nevada Assembly before taking the post as a Clark County Commissioner in 2005. The outspoken, cowboy hat-wearing Democrat was most recently elected to a four-year term in 2012.

He represented Clark County District B, which includes the northeastern part of the county.
