Regulators Issuing Draft Report On Nevada Nuclear Dump Plan

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Federal regulators say a key report about a long-studied national nuclear waste dump in Nevada finds just a small chance that radioactive contamination could get into the environment.

A Nevada state official said Friday he'll challenge the Nuclear Regulatory Commission findings about the proposed Yucca Mountain project on technical and legal grounds.

Nevada Agency for Nuclear Projects chief Bob Halstead acknowledged the NRC study due to be posted to the Federal Register on Aug. 21 moves the Yucca Mountain licensing process one step toward resolution.

But he says the report is flawed, and doesn't properly update a 2008 document that revised a 2002 environmental impact report.

The NRC announced Thursday it'll host meetings next month in Maryland, Las Vegas and Nye County before issuing a final document early next year.
